THE TRAVEL TESTER IN ACTION
1. What does it SOUND like?
Covent Garden is a great place to visit, especially around the fall/winter time when you can warm up in the many shops and dining places hidden in every corner. Sweetheart is located in the main building, right in the corner where the opera singers and other musicians always are.
It can become a bit noisy inside with the music, but you wouldn’t normally stay in a cake shop for hours anyway. Or you could always have some cupcakes to go. At the moment there isn’t a terrace outside, but they’re working with the council to get this happening soon!
2. What does it LOOK like?
With the name ‘Sweetheart’, you wouldn’t really expect anything else than a bright, sweet-looking interior, but I believe that the owners really did their best to make the place cozy and inviting, with many fun quotes and little items hidden away to marvel at:
3. What does it TASTE like?
Everything at Sweetheart is home-made, and you can really taste that! They are working hard to not only make everything taste good, but also care about your health by using local products and making sure there is no more sugar in each items than absolutely needed.
You can order a variety of teas and coffees, as well as scones, biscuits, cakes and of course cupcakes. I love how they experiment with flavours and designs, there is something new every week, so you’ll stay surprised no matter how often you visit.
Lavender and Rose-Pistachio… both a must-try!!
Gorgeous!
4. What does it FEEL like?
You can feel that the people of Sweetheart have a passion for baking and especially in their Covent Garden branch, which is only a small space, you get that true family feeling. It’s a great spot to warm up, treat yourself and feel happy!!
You can also visit for an afternoon tea or just order small cupcakes (both sweet as savoury) if you’re not a big sweet tooth
5. What does it SMELL like?
From Quiche Lorraine to cheesecakes and from blueberry tart to a heavenly slice of Victoria cake, everything at Sweetheart are baked on the premises daily. I’m sure you can imagine that just-out-the-oven smell!
They even have their own tea, which I can definitely recommend!
After our 5-senses test, weโre ready to answer our final (and perhaps most important) question in our Sweetheart Restaurant Review:
6. Does this restaurant make us happy?
The owners of the cake shop came from Greece after the recession, with a dream to re-build their lives in London. Being an expat myself for the same reason, and knowing how hard it can be to start all over again in another country, I definitely support their hard work and dreams and hope you will too by giving them a visit. The service is friendly, the cupcakes are really great and the location couldn’t be better. A great place for a pit-stop when you’re in central London!
