The Travel Tester - The Anticipation

What I really liked about most of the restaurants in Cardiff that we visited this Winter, was that there was so much local food to try! It seems that the Welsh are quite proud of their gastronomical heritage -and they should be!

Welsh food is honest and hearty, made with fresh seasonal ingredients. Check out the website of visit Wales, as they have some tasty recipes for you to try out!

The Travel Tester - The Experience

Restaurants in Cardiff City Centre

Name: The Potted Pig

Address: 27 High Street

See this restaurant on TripAdvisor >>

Located in a former bank, The Potted Pig has a great atmosphere and serves up some of the best food in Cardiff. I thought the service was impeccable, I haven’t seen such good trained (and genuinely kind) staff for a while! The menu is constantly changing as they only use fresh and seasonal products. The only remark I would have is that it was quite noisy inside (probably because of the arches bouncing everyone’s voices back), making it hard for me to understand everyone at the table.

All.The.Cheese. I went a little crazy and ate almost all of them. After I was full, I ate some more. They also have a great shop where you can buy the cheeses you liked most! Really, this place is -besides cheese heaven- a great place for slow food lovers as well. All produce is wherever possible sourced locally from independent producers from within Wales. And you can really taste the quality!

The Welsh Soup Dragon – Famous Lamb Cawl (this.is.so.good.bring.me.more!) and our Heavenly Cheese Platter. The “Snowdonia Black Bomber” was by far our favourite!

The interior here was absolutely incredible. Just love the style! I ordered a hot chocolate (which was actually hot, very hard to find in the UK for some reason) and a very tasty Flapjack (with icing, yay!).We had a seat next to the window and the big, leather chairs were really comfy.

Liquid nitrogen rapidly creates minuscule ice crystals, quickly evaporating after coming into contact with the ice cream base. The ice cream is frozen in seconds and it has a velvety texture and a creaminess that you won’t find elsewhere. I’ve never had such a unique ice cream before I must say, and I wasn’t disappointed. Great taste and quite the spectacle.

I loved that they served two Welsh ciders I never tasted before! Then came the atmosphere and that both made for a great night out! They have 4 Welsh regional real ales on tap, local guest ales and some European Lagers. I read they also serve food with locally sources products wherever possible. Good job!

Cardiff Bay Restaurants

Name: ffresh

Address: Bute Place, inside Millennium Centre

The service at ffresh was really good, people were friendly, knowledgeable and clearly wanted us to have a good experience. I always love restaurants with an open kitchen, which ffresh has, and the spacious setting of the restaurant was also very pleasant. And the food? Can’t even describe it. Not a wonder they got listed in the 2015 Michelin & Good Food Guides!
