I’ve had the book ‘New York in Stijl’ (English version: ‘The Stylist’s Guide to NYC‘) by Sibella Court on my bookshelf for a while now, but I just realized with a bit of a shock that I’ve not yet written about it on the blog. A shame, because this is probably one of the best styled books that we have at home!

If you need ideas on what to do in New York, United States, then you will have plenty after reading this beautiful coffee table book, so let me quickly tell you all about it. All pictures are of the Dutch version, but I’m sure they will pretty much look the same, except for all the weird looking words in them :)

NEW YORK IN STYLE BOOK REVIEW

The Travel Tester - The Anticipation

About the Writer

With an interior stylist as a writer, it’s hard not to publish a book that just oozes style from a couple meters away.

Sibella Court is an Australia-based interior stylist who moved to New York in 1999 and spent nine years working on advertising campaigns for Bergdorf Goodman, Brocade Home, Jo Malone, and Target, and was a regular contributor to such magazines as House & GardenReal SimpleTown & CountryTravel & Leisure, and Vogue Living. She is the proprietor of a store and the interiors editor of Grazia and Harpers Bazaar, and she designs paint ranges with Murobond Paints.

If you want to follow Sibella on her other stylish adventures around the world, you can find her on her website, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook.

The Travel Tester - The Experience

The Content of the Book

The Stylist’s Guide to NYC is thé book for lovers of interior design, vintage items, fabrics, paper, flowers, jewelry, art… and small boutique shops where you can collect all these lovely items.

The whole book looks stylish: From the cover (embossed), pink elastic (looks different in the English version though) to keep your own clippings together, via the hand-picked addresses (“I’ve been very strict to myself and will only give you the places that I’ve tasted and experienced myself”, says Sibella about this) on beautifully presented pages made of thick paper that feels great, to the page-filling attractive photos made by Sibella. It truly is a treat to flip through!

Practical Use

The tips are not around the most well-known touristic places and hotels, but rather off the beaten path and really spotted through the eyes of a local New Yorker.

Sibella say about this: “I had to take the same way back in New York”, so that’s why you will find a couple of carefully planned walking routes in this book, varying from ‘Smells and Florists’ to ‘textiles and furniture fabrics’ and ‘Curiosa and Rarities’. A unique guide to really get to know New York and her inhabitants.

The book reads like a good blog, because all texts have a personal touch to it. You get tips that you won’t normally find in a travel guide (“there isn’t much of ‘cafés’ in this area, so walk into a deli and buy a banana, or something”).

The Travel Tester - The Verdict

With over 285 pages filled with 229 places + a register with another 250 places, presented in a fantastic and inspiring lay-out, The Stylist’s Guide to NYC is really a ‘must-have book’ for me. If you will take it with you on your trip is another questions, but it’s definitely a great starting point to plan your walking routes in the city.

The only thing that I could perhaps talk negative about the book is that it’s very possible that many of the addresses won’t exist anymore, not only because my version of the book was written in 2011 (the links I gave you are pointing to the 2014 version), but also because Sibella moved from New York to Sydney herself in 2008. Of course this is always a bit of the ‘danger’ with shopping guides, but just to pay attention to that. The walking routes are of course still fun to follow and if you decide to bring the book, you can (if you dare) make notes along the way.

Want New York lijkt me superformiweldigfantakolosachtig leuk!

    groeten, Grete Karina

  • New York, New York.
