The Cinnamon Sri Lanka Hotel Chain can be found all over Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Travel Tester Reviews not 1, but 4 Resorts on the South Coast!

enEnglish (Engels)

During my trip along the South Coast of Sri Lanka, I got to stay in four different accommodations from the Cinnamon Sri Lanka Hotel chain. All of them had a unique look & feel to it and had special facilities based on the locations that they were in.

Time for The Travel Tester to investigate further and show you what you can expect at each of the hotels.

The Travel Tester - The Anticipation

The Cinnamon Hotel Story

Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts is a chain of 13 very distinct hotels and resorts throughout Sri Lanka and the Maldives, that launched in 2005. Every property has a different theme that runs through the rooms and restaurants all the way to the experiences you can have at each of the hotels.

Besides the accommodation itself, Cinnamon offers unique excursions via their sister program called “Cinnamon Nature Trails“. They also have their own “Cinnamon Magazine” and even their own airline called “Cinnamon Air“.

The Cinnamon hotels in Sri Lanka offer everything you might want from your vacation, including spas, pools, ayurvedic treatments and pretty much all the bars, coffee shops, lounges and restaurants that you might look for.

I stayed at the following four Sri Lanka Cinnamon Hotels:

  • Cinnamon Grand Hotel Colombo
  • Cinnamon Bey Beruwala Hotel
  • Hikka Tranz Hotel by Cinnamon
  • Cinnamon Wild Yala Hotel

Let’s have a closer look at each of these Cinnamon hotels Sri Lanka properties:

The Travel Tester - The Experience

THE TRAVEL TESTER IN ACTION

Cinnamon Grand Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s capital city and it has a rich colonial heritage. The city is full of contrasts as you can find everything from lush gardens to busy street markets and modern architecture to colonial buildings. There are plenty of high-end restaurants, as well as great galleries and shops in the city.

Cinnamon Grand Colombo is located in the heart of Colombo’s business, shopping and entertainment centre, 35 kilometer from the airport.

1. What does it SOUND like?

Cinnamon Colombo is advertised as “a place where senses are delighted and desires indulged”, which to me sounds intriguing! The hotel is meant to provide guest with pretty much anything they would need or want and serves as a luxury escape from the city.

Grand is the largest five-star hotel on the island and has 501 rooms!

2. What does it LOOK like?

Cinnamon Grand Sri Lanka set the tone for the rest of my trip as we were friendly welcomed and got a refreshing towel and drink on arrival. The reception area is definitely grand, with a massive water feature in the middle and lounges and shops scattered throughout the space.

Walking to the room, the blue-lit hallway showed just how big the hotel is and the dining area with the massive lights hanging from the ceiling made me feel fancy every time I walked past them to go to the buffet area.

The swimming pool looked amazing, even though we didn’t have any time to go for a swim, we did spend our final night having drinks at the pool bar, which was also very nice.

3. What does it TASTE like?

If there is one thing I will remember from the Cinnamon hotel Colombo, it’s the food. With 14(!) restaurants, there really is something for everyone here.

Some of the restaurants that you can find here are:

  • Taprobane [Main restaurant with buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner]
  • Breeze Bar [Pool bar]
  • Cheerst Pub [British-style pub]
  • Chutneys [South Indian cuisine]
  • Echo [Italian Cuisine]
  • The Lagoon [seafood restaurant]
  • Tao [Fusion restaurant]

But, my personal favourite was the Nuga Gama restaurant. Here you can get typical Sri Lankan cuisine, in the setting of a traditional Sri Lankan village. The restaurant is outdoors and in the center of the restaurant, you can find a 200-years old Banyan Tree.

The tree is surrounded by wattle & daub huts, an open kitchen, local kade (grocery store) and you get served by traditionally dressed staff. There is even a complete farm on site with live chickens and a cow! Can definitely recommend a dinner here!

4. What does it FEEL like?

Reception staff was super kind and made sure our check-in process ran smoothly and our bags made it to the room as quick as possible. When I was in the room, someone came by a bit later to check if I had everything I needed, which definitely made me feel well looked after.

The room was spacious and clean, but it did feel a little bit ‘old’ to me. I am personally more drawn to a more modern interior in hotels, but the room did have everything I need, including a desk, bath tub, toiletries, hair dryer, bathrobe & slippers and even a clothing line!

5. What does it SMELL like?

While we didn’t have any time on this trip to check out some of the interesting places to visit in Colombo, I got a bit of a sense of what to do in Colombo through the Cinnamon Grand website. What I liked is that the hotel offers some great Colombo sightseeing tours that as a hotel guest, you can book.

For example, you can go on a Colombo Architectural Tour, where you get to see some of the city’s spectacular buildings dating back to the colonial era. You will get to see buildings such as the Old Parliament, Galle Face Hotel, The Dutch Hospital, Town Hall and the incredible Old Colombo Light House from 1829 that you can see on the photo below.

If you’re new to Sri Lanka and not sure yet what to do in Colombo, then booking this tour could be a great option for you!

Cinnamon Bey Beruwala

Beruwala is a town in the Kalutara district on the South-west coast of Sri Lanka. It’s located about 60 kilometers South of Colombo and it’s the spot for the first Muslim settlement on the island.

1. What does it SOUND like?

Cinnamon Bey Beruwela Sri Lanka one of the largest resorts in the South of the country. There are 200 rooms and 6 restaurants. We were welcomed by the sound of entertainers, dancing and making music on drums in traditional costume.

2. What does it LOOK like?

The theme of this hotel is “Grand Turkish” and it pays tribute to the Arabian traders who first made contact with Sri Lanka in the 10th century. The interiors are developed by Channa Daswatte, one Sri Lanka’s most talented architects and creative minds.

Personally, I found my room here the nicest of all the hotels we stayed at, even though I had a bit of an issue with some termites flying around the bathroom (apparently there was a bit of an outbreak at the time we were there, none of the other bloggers had an issue with it in their rooms!). I really liked the light colours in the room and the separate shower. The room felt new and fresh.

The room has everything I needed!

3. What does it TASTE like?

Just like the other Cinnamon hotels, the food options at Cinnamon Bey Sri Lanka are great and this is apparently the only resort in the country outside of Colombo that offers so many dining options.

The buffet restaurant offers a wide range of continental and Sri Lankan dishes, with daily themes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Make sure not to miss the show cooking happening at one of the stations during dinner!

Other options are:

  • Fire [Mediterranean-themed grill & pizzeria with wood-fired stone deck oven]
  • Raw [Sushi bar offering everything from sushi and sashimi to cured fish and shellfish dishes]
  • I.C.E [Ice Cream & Dessert Lounge – no more info needed, haha]
  • Mezz^2 [Lebanese/Middle Eastern Cuisine]
  • Grain Bar and Lounge [Bar and Lounge, like it says :)]
  • 800° [Poolside snacks and drinks bar]
  • In-Room Dining [If you don’t feel like going out, you can have for example a candle-lit dinner or champagne breakfast on your private balcony, so romantic!]

We got to experience a FANTASTIC dinner over at the “Rock Salt Restaurant”. During the day, we went with the head chef to a local market to buy fish and then he prepared the fish for us to go “Lava Stone Cooking”. Basically this is a hot stone, where you can grill your own fish & meat. So much fun!

The menu for this incredible dinner was as follows:

  • Selection of exotic sushi and sashimi with traditional accompaniments
  • Seafood miso soup
  • Mint sorbet
  • Fish, prawns and chicken grilled on lava stone
  • Coffee infused coconut cake and caramelized black magic cheese cream with blueberry coulis

4. What does it FEEL like?

Cinnamon Bay Sri Lanka has no less than 3(!) pools, a spa and fitness studio that offers gym and yoga classes. I definitely feel like I’ve missed out not having time for any of this!

The main pool is located at the end of the layered lounge and from here, you have a spectacular garden view, with the ocean right behind it. It feels like you’re in a tropical paradise… and to be honest: that’s exactly where you are!

The incredible pool area, that only TravelDave took advantage of :)

5. What does it SMELL like?

If you have more time and would like to explore the city of Beruwala, then the hotel has some great options for you to book. You could choose a Madu Ganga river safari, visit a turtle hatchery, go to the Bawa “brief garden” or head out to “Little Adams Peak”. Whatever you choose, I’m sure the nature in the area will blow you away!

My stay at the hotel definitely smelled like I want more!

Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon

Hikkaduwa is one of the famous beach resorts on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. Here, you’ll find shallow water with stunning coral reefs and rock formations, so it’s a perfect place to go snorkeling or diving.

1. What does it SOUND like?

Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon Sri Lanka is apparently the place to party, and according to the Cinnamon website, they blend the parties with “eclectic doses of comfort to give you a stay by the sea that’s bound to be an experience of a lifetime”. Now, if that doesn’t sound interesting, I don’t know what else does.

I stayed in a room which had a nice balcony facing the swimming pool and the ocean. Perhaps that was my favourite feature of this hotel: listening to the ocean while falling asleep! By the description of the hotel, it sounded like this was going to be a loud party place, but nothing of that. I slept great and very peaceful instead!

Cinnamon Sri Lanka Hotel Review: Is This the Best Accommodation on the South Coast of the Country? || The Travel Tester || #SriLanka #Asia #Travel #Hotel #Accommodation #Cinnamon

2. What does it LOOK like?

For me, the real draw of the hotel lies more in the public spaces rather than the room itself, which to me felt a bit outdated because of the brown and yellow colour scheme. I felt like I stepped into the ’60s!

Besides that, I did like the fact that the room had a massive balcony, from where you had a good view over the pool and the beach nearby. Also great were all the super cute squirrels that ran around everywhere, but that might be not for everyone, I suppose.

The room had the airconditioner blasting when I got in, covering the windows in lots of condense, so I turned that off right away and I was finally able to look out of my windows. There was a humidifier in the room, so I guess the building has some ventilation issues they could also work on.

What I liked about this hotel was the graffiti, murals and art installations along the property, some of which you can see on the photo above.

3. What does it TASTE like?

“Tranzfusion” is the Continental / Sri Lankan Buffet and a la Carte Restaurant at Hikka Tranz. Besides this restaurant that’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can also go to “The Crab”, which serves specialty seafood in a fine dining and al fresco setting. Rather have steak or kebab? Then “Tranzfix” is the restaurant for you!

For drinks, you have the option of going to “Tranzfuse” (the pool bar), “Tranzform” (the wine bar) or “Tranzcend” (the cocktail bar).

4. What does it FEEL like?

If you’re a beach lover, then this Cinnamon hotel is probably going to be the favourite out of the four I’m covering today. The hotel has, apart from a stunning pool (including a kids pool), spa, gym, indoor- and outdoor sport facilities, also a nice stretch of beach right at the edge of the property!

I can totally see how you can easily spend a few days here and come back home feeling all relaxed.

The view from my balcony did not disappoint!

5. What does it SMELL like?

Hikka Tranz smelled -yet again- like more to me. It seemed there is so much more to explore here than the 20 minutes of down-time we got on our trip!

Excursions include: whale watching in Mirissa (seasonal – November to March), day trips to Galle Fort, a visit to the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda or the Ambalangoda Mask Factory.

You can also enjoy glass-bottom boat tours and there are various snorkeling and diving options, for example to the Black Coral Gardens (seasonal).

Cinnamon Wild Yala

Yala National Park is often described at ‘little Africa’, because this is the place to spot some incredible wildlife such as buffalo, crocodiles, elephants and even leopards!

Cinnamon Wild Yala lies right on the border of the park and so this resort makes for a great place to start your adventure. If you want to know more about the Yala Jeep Safari, please click here to read our full review.

1. What does it SOUND like?

The Wild Yala Cinnamon lodge Sri Lanka is a place to escape into the wild -in style. This luxury eco hotel with 68 chalets is not only surrounded by nature, but the wildlife even comes up close to you at the water hole that’s right next to the resort’s pool area.

The resort even has their own tribe of resident grey lemurs that you are likely to spot, as well as wild boars and many squirrels and monitor lizards. In fact, when we drove into the resort at nighttime, we already spotted an elephant on the road! Doesn’t that sounds exciting to you? It does to me!

Cinnamon Sri Lanka Hotel Review: Is This the Best Accommodation on the South Coast of the Country? || The Travel Tester || #SriLanka #Asia #Travel #Hotel #Accommodation #Cinnamon

2. What does it LOOK like?

At Yala, you get to stay in your own private hut, which is either in the jungle or right next to the beach. The rooms were renovated in 2011 and feature interiors by local artist Meena de Silva.

The hut has a nice veranda to spot wildlife from (yes, the animals can literally walk up to your door, so you might now understand why they don’t do room service here!) and at nighttime, the staff will guide you safely back to your rooms.

In the room (which I thought was a little bit dark, but still looked great), I had a massive double bed, a table to work from (but again, with no light), a closet with safe, tv with coffee/tea maker and mini-bar, just like in all the other hotels.

I really liked the bathroom in my room and it had a big rain shower, which was great!

3. What does it TASTE like?

Wild Yala wouldn’t be a Cinnamon hotel if there weren’t great dining options for you:

The Roof Top Bar

This lounge and bar gives you a great view over the lake!

Pugmarks Bar

This a la carte lounge and bar is right next to reception and the place to relax in a big armchair at the end of the day. There is a big screen where you can watch sports games too.

Tuskers

This restaurant is just above the reception area and it’s where you can get a nice breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s buffet style with Sri Lankan and continental dishes.

PalatuPana – The Bush Dinner

Now this is where things get interesting because here you can choose from a “Picnic à la Grandé” (the guide will find you a serene outdoor spot and give you a picnic basket) and “Dining by the Lake” (you sit on a platform elevated above the lake with incredible views!).

4. What does it FEEL like?

Staying at Wild Yala definitely feels like ADVENTURE! You just spot wild animals everywhere you go and walking back to the room at night, seeing the footprints of the animals everywhere, just gives you a thrill like nothing else.

Then you walk from the pool to the lake, where in 10 steps you actually see water buffaloes, many birds and even crocodiles, that’s just insane!

The pool, by the way, is not one where you can make a lot of laps, but it’s more of a relaxing place to unwind a bit. It’s not really pristine, as there are leaves in it sometimes, but definitely nice to chill on a hot day!

When you try and take a photo of a nice bird… and only see the GIGANTIC crocodile when you zoom into the picture afterwards, haha!

5. What does it SMELL like?

Yala smells like nature! Green trees, ocean waves, fresh air, it’s all here and make you connect a bit more with nature than back home (at least for me living in noisy, busy London).

The staff at Cinnamon Wild Yala offer a variety of nature experiences, such as night safaris and night walks, general nature walks, visits to the fishing village and much, much more! You can arrange these at the hotel at an additional cost.

The Travel Tester - The Verdict

THE VERDICT

6. Does this hotel chain make us happy?

With the visit to four of the Cinnamon Hotels in Southern Sri Lanka, I feel like I’ve gotten a great taste of the variety that the hotels have to offer and I really enjoyed how they all have a similar concept, but a different execution in terms of style.

One of the big draws to staying at a Cinnamon property for most travellers I believe is that it’s a super convenient and easy way to travel to Sri Lanka and get that real holiday feeling without having to stress out about where to eat and what to see and do. Personally, these are things that I actually like to organise myself and eating a buffet meal especially was getting a bit boring for me. I feel like if you don’t make an effort to explore on your own, staying at these type of accommodations can prevent you from getting a “real feel” of the country and the places that you’re in, because you’re just staying on the property because it’s convenient.

That said, I can highly recommend the hotels to travelling families (there is always something to do for the kids, their is always some food that they will like) and for anyone looking for a nice pool and a laid-back holiday. You will be taken care of, and you will still have the chance to eat Sri Lankan food if you want and see more of the area.

For myself, I think that especially in a place where the hotel is part of the experience in the area, such as Hikka Tranz (on the beach) and Wild Yala (in the national park), the hotels are a fantastic option to combine the location with the comfort of a resort-stay.

In all the hotels, staff has been friendly, the food great and the rooms featured everything I would need, so in conclusion, I would say that the Cinnamon hotel chain definitely gets an “APPROVED” mark from The Travel Tester!

Bonus Tip: Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort

During our trip, we had a lunch at another fantastic luxury resort that I didn’t want to you miss out on. It’s called the Anantara Peace Haven Resort and it’s located in Tangalle.

For lunch, this is what we had:

  • Spiced crab cake (Negombo lagoon crab, chili mango salsa)
  • Wattakka kalu pol (Roasted butternut squash and pumpkin seeds topped with buffalo curd served with Sri Lankan achcharu, papadam, pol sambol and white rice)
  • Signature tropical indulgence (pineapple ragout, curry ice cream, coco mouse and biscuit)

While I didn’t get to see the rooms or any of the other facilities, I did see the incredible restaurant area and beach. I’ll show you the pictures to make up your own opinions about it:

How to get to Sri Lanka? The only way to get to Sri Lanka is by air. There are no ferries between India or other nearby countries. I flew from London with Sri Lankan airlines, as there are daily direct flights from Heathrow to Colombo. The flight with Srilankan Airlines took about 10 hours. While flying economy is always a bit uncomfortable long-haul, I did like the food and entertainment options on my flight and the staff was super friendly. The flight from London was packed, so 100% make sure to book your seats in advance to prevent yourself ending up in middle seats. You can even bid for business class seats, a friend of mine got hers for as low as 100 pounds!

You can also opt for domestic flights, Cinnamon Air Sri Lanka has small 8-seater planes to give you some scenic flight fun! And don’t forget to use the tuktuk in the cities (negotiate your price before you get in!)
